"Mountain collapses?"

或是"landflows and mudslides"

1.Debris flow

Deadly Mud Slide
Karen Fanning

Thursday, January 13—Rescue crews continued their search on Wednesday for survivors of a powerful mud slide that buried more than a dozen homes in La Conchita, California, Monday.

More than 600 emergency workers from 20 agencies are sifting through mud, sand, and rubble in hopes of locating 13 people who are reported missing. Days of torrential rains unleashed several mud slides in the region this week.

Although the La Conchita mud slide has claimed the lives of 10 people, just as many people have been pulled out alive. Officials remain optimistic that they will find more survivors.

"The rescue workers are going in; they're finding voids still in the rubble pile that we believe are large enough that somebody could be in," said Ventura County Fire Chief Bob Roper. "As long as we're seeing that, then we hold out hope."

While most workers are digging through the mud by hand, they also have the help of search dogs. Some are using listening devices designed to detect any signs of life beneath the debris.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger surveyed the destruction on Wednesday.

La Conchita suffered significant damage in 1995 when another massive mud slide hit the town. Afterward, construction workers built a barrier wall, but the force of Monday's mud slide proved to be too great.

"It used to be this cute little seaside community here," said survivor Bill Harbison. "And it just has a giant tear down the middle of it . . . just rubble and remains of what used to be people's homes."

Heavy rains have wreaked havoc not only in California, but also in other parts of the U.S. Flooding along the Ohio River has forced people in West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky to flee their homes. Power outages were reported in many parts of Ohio. In Overton, Nevada, residents were evacuating their homes to escape the swelling waters of the Muddy River.
